The FBI believes terrorists could be rush-hour explosions on the San Francisco and other bridges in California.

State governor Gray Davis sparked a with the White House when he publicly announced the threat. He said: "We've received from several different sources threats that the law enforcement community believes are that there will be an effort to blow up one of those bridges. The best preparation is to let the terrorists know we know."

A senior aide to George W Bush said the president was "unhappy" with Davis' decision to publicise the warning. But Davis insisted he needed to alert the public. He said: "If I didn't make that statement and something happened, I'd be myself."

Transport officials are commuters to keep using the crossings.

PLANES have been from flying over Britain's 15 nuclear plants. The increased security follows a warning by the International Atomic Energy Agency that attacks on nuclear power stations were "far more likely" after September 11.
