A visit to the doctor

Language point 

Note the use of the present perfect tense in this conversation. Much of the discuassion focuses on what the patient has expereinced in the recent past and its present and continuing effects. Typically the present perfect is used in this way. Examples include:

  • "How long have you had ......"

  • "I've been feeling ......."

  • "I've had ......"

Patient: Well I hope you can help. I've been feeling very unwell recently, and I've had an upset stomach. . And now I've got a bad headache, as well.

Doctor: How long have you ?

Patient : For about two days now. And the headache came on yesterday.

Doctor : Have you had diarrhoea?

Patient: Yes, quite badly. .

Doctor: Do you think ?

Patient: Well it might be, but I .

Doctor: Well, it sounds as if you've picked up a stomach infection. .
