Many phrases use the word "hand", particularly with prepositions. 

If something is in hand we mean it is being done or dealt with.

But if something is at hand then we mean that it is near or we can get it easily.

The noun hand also means the cards you have been dealt in a card game - hence the expression "show your hand".
