Paragraphs Quiz

This section introduces you to a typical pattern of paragraph writing in academic writing. An assertion (or statement)  is followed by evidence to substantiate your assertion. Finally an evaluation or commentary on this evidence sometimes follows. Look at the following example:

The first thing we notice about the organization of Chinese business is the small scale of enterprise. In Taiwan for example, the number of small companies increased by 150% between 1966 and 1972. Interestingly, then, economic development has not been achieved (as in the United States) by increasing the size of businesses.

Comment: This sentence contains as assertion = Chinese business is small scale. This sentence contains evidence. This sentence contains evaluation = Economic development in Taiwan is different to that in the United States
