Getting started with Text-to-Speech

If you are new to TTS and are wondering how to use it on your PC, then the minimum requirement is a modern PC equipped with a sound card running Windows 95 / 98. If you have Windows 2000 or XP as your operating system, then a basic MS Agent speech engine is already installed as part of the system. You will then only need to download the VLC TTS Browser for SAPI 5 program (or try using the Narrator accessory that is part of Windows 2000). For Windows 2000 or XP it is also a good idea to download the Lernout & Hauspie TruVoice speech engine for SAPI 4(see below) as this is default used by the MS Agent Narrator.

For an introduction to TTS and Microsoft Agent see the following pages:

For Windows XP or earlier systems you can download most of this software from the VLC Agent Character Dialog Maker page which will automatically download the MS Agent control and the L & H TruVoice speech engine for you if you don't have them installed.

You can also go directly to Microsoft's Agent web site and download the MS Agent core files and speech engine and install them on your computer. You can then download either the VLC Text-to-Speech Browser program for the Text-to-Speech Narrator which will enable you to use the speech engine to read web documents or documents on your desktop.
